2008 is 1984
Did you ever think you would see a supposedly “independent” media, that likes to call itself the “fourth branch” of government, that sets itself up as the “guardian” of our “freedoms” doing the exact opposite of what it is supposed to be doing???

In George Orwell’s novel 1984, the government was all-controlling, and re-wrote history and even the happening of current events to suit its own purposes.  The “truth” was what the dictatorial Big Brother government said it was–regardless of actual reality.  We don’t pretend that the Big Media of today is as oppressive or all-powerful as the totalitarian government in 1984.  However, the similarities are striking, and if the power of Big Media continues unchecked, the effect on our society will be overwhelming, and not to our good.

When the year 1984 rolled around, we thought to ourselves, guess Orwell missed on that one.  We were premature.  2008 is 1984 in too many ways, as Big Media presents its “revisionist” version of things in the light most favorable to the Left, and either ignores or attempts to discredit whatsoever stands in the way of its version. Its effort in doing this actually began years ago.

Hear us, please: if Big Media can help get Obama elected, then its 1984-ish effort will come to fruition in 2008. If that happens, then Big Media’s PR job for Obama will continue full-force, revisionist history and all.

In today’s world, Big Media slants, leaves out, and “re-writes” things in the light most favorable to the Left and to the liberal agenda.  In the context of the presidential election, that means putting on a full-court press in favor of Barack Obama, Big Media’s Chosen One.  There haven’t been an abundance of negative stories about Obama from Big Media, but there have been and will continue to be no shortage of such about John McCain and Sarah Palin or anyone or anything else that stands in the way of the Obama train.

There has been and will continue to be an almost unlimited number of “cheerleader” stories for Obama, that present the candidate in a favorable light, and soft-pedal any perceived “negatives” that the other side attempts to pin on him. That means that Big Media is thoroughly “in the tank” for Obama.

We recall in 1992 it was reported that a survey showed at least 90% of the media  supported Bill Clinton in that election.  The preponderance of “FOBs” (Friends of Bill) in the media and Hollywood who helped Clinton win the White House bore that out.  Today, that number could be even higher.  Bill Clinton, while an astute and effective campaigner, did not have the supposed “magic” attributed to Barack Obama, or the “star” status hung on him by Big Media.  The bandwagon is even heavier and rolling faster this time around.  That means that Big Media’s effort to get him into the White House has been and will be even more pronounced.

In 1984 the main character tried to resist Big Brother’s effort to control all, and made furtive efforts to go his own way, knowing the consequences of being caught would be dire. In today’s world, those of us who resist Big Media’s big effort at control can suffer an undesirable set of consequences as well.  In today’s world, there is one television news channel that does not follow Big Media’s Obama bandwagon.  For its independence and balanced approach to the news, it is termed a “Republican” network by critics in Big Media or a “mouthpiece” for conservatives, which are ludicrous assertions.

To our observation, conservative syndicated newspaper columnists do not get the exposure that their liberal counterparts do, sometimes even in smaller markets where the majority of the readership is conservative or leans that way. Instead, liberal newspapers thrust an inordinate amount of liberal columnists on their conservative audience. It is our belief that those who don’t follow the “party line” with Big Media’s agenda probably don’t have too much of a future in that business, unless they either work for an alternative outlet or can establish themselves so well that even their liberal bosses can’t fire them.

With the internet, we can now go on-line and find the conservative columnists who don’t get the exposure they should.  For that matter, we can go on-line and read our local liberal newspapers for free, instead of sending them subscription money, which enables them to continue their force-feeding to us of their liberal agenda.

We do think in today’s world, Big Media “defines” what the “truth” is, and decides what gets reported, and how.  That approach is hardly the role that the media is supposed to play, or says that it does as it arrogantly appoints itself as “guardian” of our freedoms.  The old saying of “the fox guarding the henhouse” comes to mind.

That effort by Big Media presently manifests itself in its push to get Obama elected.  If that happens, then Big Media will have achieved its crowning moment–convincing “the masses” to elect “its” president. Big Media will then continue its influence, by “sanitizing” the news in favor of its candidate, reporting the news in a way most favorable to its Anointed One.

So, in a world in which Big Media tries to define and control what “reality” is and report the news through its own prism of bias, what can the rest of us do? We don’t claim to know all of what that can be, and don’t attempt to list all of that here, but the following is a start:

1. Think for yourself.  Big Media is not the caretaker of your mind.  That is your own responsibility.

2.  Stay active.  Vegetating in front of a TV is no way to live a fruitful, fun, or meaningful life.  “Get a life”? You already have one, so live it, and do that now  You don’t need to watch network programming or fawn over celebrities to give your life “meaning.”

3.  Watch out for your children.  If you allow your kids to vegetate in front of those TVs, and, particularly, if they learn that habit from you, you have done them an injustice.  Don’t be surprised when they reject some or all of what you teach them, since it will no doubt be different from what they’ve ingested for hours on end in front of the boob tube.

4. Rediscover reading.  Yes, read a good book.  And then another, and another. Chose those books with care, but read something “fun” and then something “deeper,” and something else that may challenge you or help you grow.  And, if you consider yourself to be a Christian, how often do you read the Bible?

5.  Volunteer.  Serving others, just because they need what you can give. That takes us away from our own set of problems, and sometimes helps us solve those, or at least put them in perspective.  Helping someone else, even if just for a couple of hours or a day, just to do it, not for any “brownie” points with others or with the Almighty.  One of the best feelings in the world, even if it makes you tired, is helping someone else.  There is a reason why Jesus said it was more blessed to give than to receive. Again, if you consider yourself to be a Christian, can you fail to show others grace, when God has shown you so much?

6. Find the alternatives.  We’ve listed “Get the News” on this site which shows some alternatives to Big Media’s liberal-biased news programming.  Feel free to watch or read them, without continuing to sit in front of the TV once those programs or features are over.  On the internet, there are a number of resources from which to get news and information without the taint of the Left.  We don’t claim that the “Get the News” list is all-inclusive, but it is a start.

7. Exercise your body. If you are physically able, exercise.  Whether that is walking, gardening, playing a sport, or something else.  First consult your doctor regarding exercise and your health.

8. Exercise your mind.  See Rediscover reading, above.  Also, you may have creative ways of expressing yourself, using your talents, or can discover abilities and talents you have let lie dormant or didn’t know you had.

9.  Find a healthy hobby.  Related to the previous two, but you may have other ways of utilizing your talents.  This point does not include long and addictive periods of time sitting in front of a computer screen, mesmerized by the internet.

10.  Cancel subscriptions, start others.  We state this one carefully.  If your local paper leans left, you may not wish to cancel it.  But do think about reading it on-line, for free.  And don’t feel guilty if you do that.  They are making money selling ads on-line, and for how many years have you faithfully paid your subscriptions to them, only to see them slant the news and be biased in favor of the Left?  The same with magazine subscriptions.  Have you continued to re-new and read mags that tilt to the Left?  There are alternatives out there.  Why not order those instead?  If you own a business and have magazines in your lobby, are you giving the Left free PR to your clientele by putting their magazines in your lobby?
11.  Tell someone about this site.  Ok, that one’s a bit self-serving on our part, we admit.  But, we are trying to get people to see that Big Media and the Left want to control our world, this country, and our minds, and we refuse to fold.  How about you?  If there are more and more of you thinking for yourselves, doing the things just stated, and other healthy ones not mentioned here, then we think the world will be a better place, and Big Media’s level of influence will definitely drop, as will its hefty income (we are not trying to cause a financial hardship on employees of Big Media; still, Big Media is not “entitled” to the advertising income it receives, unless we watch it and cause that income to materialize in the first place).

If we just let things go as they have been for too long, with Big Media’s drone of liberal bias permeating our world, and that of our impressionable children, then 2008 will indeed prove to be much more like Orwell’s 1984 than it should be.

You can stop that pattern.  Will you?
